Australian Diamonds and Melbourne Vixens netballer Liz Watson has teamed up with Batch Tested as their latest ambassador to advocate for safe supplementation use in sport.
2021 has been a challenging year for Watson, who missed the Suncorp Super Netball season after suffering a foot injury. But after being given the all clear from her surgeon last week, the Vixens star is looking forward to getting back into training.
“I am very excited to transition out of rehab and get back into more netball training. 2022 is set to be an exciting year for netball, and I’m looking forward to having a strong preseason to set myself up for a great season with the Melbourne Vixens. I also have the Commonwealth Games in sight, but there is a lot of hard work ahead to have the best chance to make the team,” Watson said.
Commenting on her new ambassador role with Batch Tested, Watson added: “Nutrition and supplements have played a massive role in my recovery – from protein and creatine to collagen and vitamin D. As an elite athlete, it’s so important to know that what we are putting into our bodies is safe and clean, to uphold the integrity of the sport I love to play. Batch Tested provides athletes with the comfort of knowing this, and it’s a privilege to partner with such an important platform.”
Batch Tested is an online platform offering only products that have been independently verified by programs such as Human and Supplement Testing Australia (HASTA) and Informed Sport, which screen for substances that may result in a positive doping violation.
Since launching earlier this year with Olympic Swimmer Mack Horton as ambassador, the Australian-first platform has been welcomed by the sporting community as a one-stop shop that gives athletes ‘peace of mind’.
Award-winning pharmacist and former Queensland Firebird Karen Brown and fellow pharmacist Rod Garozzo, founded Batch Tested after recognising how difficult it was for athletes to access specifically batch tested and certified products in one location.
“As a former elite athlete and pharmacist, I am very aware of the risks associated with supplement use. But as more supplement manufacturers have taken the step to offer batch tested products, the need for a service like ours became apparent.
“It is a minefield out there for athletes, teams and clinicians to find products that are safe for use in professional programs. There are more than 200 substances on the WADA prohibited list and an Australian study conducted in 2016 showed 1 in 5 supplements contained prohibited substances that would result in a positive drug test for a professional athlete – it’s a challenging landscape to navigate.
“Testing positive – inadvertently or otherwise – can result in career-ending penalties and ruin athlete reputations. Batch Tested doesn’t just streamline the ordering process, we are part of an athlete’s care team. We give them peace of mind that the supplements they take are clean and safe, having undergone independent third-party testing,” Karen said.
Those who demand the most of themselves, their performance, and their nutrition, can access the latest batch tested products from powerhouse manufacturers such as PILLAR Performance, Swisse, Body Science and Science in Sport at batchtested.com.au.
